About Kristiansand
Kristiansand is the capital of Southern Norway and is centrally located in the far south of the country. The wider region consists of Kristiansand and Søgne, Songdalen, Iveland, Vennesla, Birknes and Lillesand, with a total of 120,000 inhabitants. Around 80,000 live in Kristiansand.
Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV. The city is widely seen as Norway’s “Number one summer city.” Kristiansand is perfect for lazy summer days, swimming and boating between and around its many little islands, beautiful harbors and small white houses.
Many families with children also take a trip to Kristiansand in the summer to experience the “Dyreparken” zoo and “Kardemomme By” theme park. The region also boasts some of Norway's most beautiful and cleanest beaches - Bystranda, Hamresanden and Skotteviga. The first is a fine, sandy beach with clear water, swimming docks and even palm trees!
The public park “Ravnedalen” is located within walking distance from the city center. In the city center you will also find “Posebyen”, which consists of Northern Europe's largest concentration of small, white wooden houses. These were built during the 18th and 19th centuries.
