Norway Round Trip through Southern Norway and Flekkefjord

Round Trip through Southern Norway and Flekkefjord

This round trip through Southern Norway offers some of the region’s most memorable experiences – from lively coastal towns and historic lighthouses to dramatic rocky landscapes and peaceful fjord views. The journey takes you to Kristiansand, along the scenic Nordsøvegen, includes two nights in the charming town of Flekkefjord, and concludes in Stavanger.

From the moment you arrive in Kristiansand, the journey through Southern Norway’s coastal landscapes begins. This round trip is rich in contrasts, combining small, picturesque towns with open seascapes, steep cliffs and rolling green hills. Travelling along roads close to the coast, the route offers viewpoints and stops that make the drive itself a key part of the experience.

Enjoy the nature, culture, and history of Southern Norway.

Although it is possible to drive directly from Kristiansand to Flekkefjord via the E39, we strongly recommend following the Nordsøvegen – often referred to as the “coastal travel route”. This scenic drive leads you past rocky islets, crashing waves and historic coastal communities, offering some of the finest views along the way.

A stop in Mandal, Norway’s southernmost town, is particularly worthwhile, as is a visit to the Lindesnes Lighthouse and Lista Lighthouse. Both locations offer impressive views of the rugged coastline and are well known for their rich birdlife.

On arrival in Flekkefjord, you will spend two nights at the historic Grand Hotell Flekkefjord and have plenty of time to explore the town at your own pace. One of the highlights is the old quarter, Hollenderbyen, which reflects the town’s close ties with Dutch merchants in the 19th century.

The surrounding landscape of Flekkefjord also invites exploration. The coastal and fjord scenery is ideal for walking and outdoor experiences, and a popular excursion is the island of Hidra with its viewpoint at Hågåsen, where striking nature meets local history. For a truly unique experience, you can also try rail cycling along the former Flekkefjord railway line.

Magma Geopark, Sandy Beaches and Stavanger

On the final day of your journey, you may choose to drive directly to Stavanger to enjoy the city’s history, shopping, culture and cafés. Alternatively, spend the day exploring the remarkable Magma Geopark – a UNESCO-protected area often described as one of the places on Earth that most closely resembles the surface of the Moon.

Here you will find a wide range of viewpoints and walking routes, offering both unforgettable natural scenery and insights into Norway’s geological history dating back to the Stone Age.

After exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Magma Geopark, the route continues through the Jæren region towards Stavanger. And here comes a surprise: you can end your round trip through Southern Norway with a visit to a genuine sandy beach. The Jæren coastline is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

When it is time to board the cruise ferry back to Hirtshals, you can look forward to a relaxed return journey. After a pleasant evening meal – and perhaps live music in the Seaview Bar & Nightclub – you can enjoy a good night’s sleep in your comfortable cabin before arriving back in Denmark the following morning.
