Norway: A true hiking Mecca

Norway is known worldwide for its excellent hiking terrain – and for good reason! The country's varied nature offers a wide range of hiking options, from short, family-friendly trips to long mountain hikes where you can be alone in nature for days on end.

Among the most popular hiking routes are Preikestolen, Kjeragbolten and Gaustatoppen – but almost no matter where in Norway you travel, you will find great hiking routes to local mountain peaks, beautiful viewpoints and idyllic lakes.

Mountain biking or road biking - Norway has it all!

Norway offers a wealth of beautiful cycling routes where you can ride along fjords, through beautiful forests and over majestic mountains. Along the way, you can stop at small settlements and historic buildings or enjoy a packed lunch on the banks of a rushing river.

Norway's most famous cycling route is Rallarvegen near Voss and Flåm in Fjord Norway, but Telemark and Southern Norway also offer plenty of fantastic cycling routes, whether you are interested in mountain biking or regular road biking.

Many hotels and resorts offer bike rental for one or several days if you do not want to bring your own – and if you want a little boost on your trip, many places even rent out electric bikes.

Discover Norway’s big cities

If you want a holiday all about history, culture and gastronomy, you should plan a visit to one of Norway’s big cities. Whether you choose the capital Oslo, the country's second largest city Bergen or one of the smaller cities like Kristiansand or Stavanger, you can look forward to a holiday that has everything you could ever wish for.

Naturally, Norway also offers plenty of mouth-watering food and drink options, from traditional fish, shellfish or game dishes to world-leading ciders and jams from Hardangerfjord's vast orchards.

All these cities have a rich cultural life, offering traditional Norwegian art and culture as well as more modern works of music, visual arts and theater – and do not forget that a walk among the beautiful historic buildings is always a must in Norway’s cities.

Feel the presence of history

There can be no doubt that Norway is a Viking homeland, and many places throughout the country offer opportunities to experience the nation's dramatic history up close. See real Viking ships and treasures in Oslo's impressive museums, or travel back in time in one of Norway's immersive historical villages and experience the Viking life first-hand.

An absolute must on any vacation in Norway is a visit to one of the country's unique stave churches, where architecture, history and craftsmanship come together. And if you just cannot get enough of Norwegian traditions, many smaller communities have cozy open-air museums where old buildings, craftmanship and traditions are brought to life.

If you are interested in more recent history, Norway also offers memories of less ancient – but no less dramatic – events: In Kristiansand, for instance, you can visit the large cannon museum, and at Rjukan near Gaustatoppen you can revisit Norway's most famous historical act of sabotage, which has been the subject of several popular movies and TV series.

Road trips in Norway

A road trip is perhaps the best way to experience Norway. This way, you can plan a route with the experiences and sights that are at the top of your bucket list and take the trip at your own pace.

Norway's many campsites offer the opportunity to rent a cabin for a single night, but if you enjoy the outdoors, you can also take advantage of "the Right to Roam", a Norwegian concept which gives everyone public access to nature, and pitch your tent or park your motorhome in the middle of the beautiful Norwegian scenery.

Winter holidays in the snowy Norwegian mountains

Speaking of popular holidays, we must not forget one of many European tourists’ absolute favorites: the winter holiday. If you are looking for a true winter wonderland – or a cozy winter getaway – the Norwegian mountain scenery has a lot to offer.

This Nordic winter wonderland is a perfect setting for both a romantic couples’ trip or fun family quality time in the snow. We recommend renting a traditional log cabin where you can enjoy long days in the snow, followed by evenings in front of the open fire with hot chocolate and a good book or board game.
