Myrkdalen, just a two-hour drive from Bergen, proudly calls itself "Western Norway's most complete ski resort." Here, you'll find everything from a delightful children's area and family-friendly slopes to 22 runs of varying difficulty, three terrain parks, a 5 km lit trail, and 30 km of groomed cross-country tracks. Myrkdalen’s ski school offers lessons for children and adults at all levels. Whether you opt for private lessons or group instruction, the school's motto is "Skiing should be fun for everyone!"

Experienced instructors provide a safe and enjoyable start for children and beginners, while more advanced skiers can book a top touring course to learn techniques and safety skills for off-piste adventures in Myrkdalen's stunning terrain. The ski school also offers cross-country skiing courses, where you can learn how to use your body more effectively, helping to avoid sore muscles or injuries after a long day in the snow.

Myrkdalen - Ski school

The staff are always ready with helpful advice and will assist you in finding the right gear for you or your children. When you rent equipment from Sport 1, you always have the option to borrow a helmet for free – and the equipment you rent is, of course, always freshly serviced and well-maintained.

If you bring your own skis on holiday, you can have them sharpened at Sport 1’s brand-new sharpening machine, ensuring you have a smooth glide through the snow.

Myrkdalen - ski rental

, you can choose from three different sections – one for beginners, one for intermediates, and one for experts. During much of the winter season, the fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down; the Village Park often has night skiing on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

 is named after the famous Norwegian freestyle skier Klaus Finne, and it includes many creative elements, even designed by the local sports hero. This park is recommended for intermediate and expert skiers.

 is divided into an upper and lower section. The upper part features large jumps and elements, while the lower part offers an entertaining course for children with small jumps, features, and hills.

Terrain parks

The children's area has everything needed to help children become confident on skis in a safe and enjoyable way. It features a slow-moving conveyor belt, two platter lifts, three different green slopes, and the "Fox Park" with fun and easy jumps and elements.

The children's area is conveniently located next to the parking lot at Myrkdalen Hotel and apartments, making it easily accessible no matter where you stay in the area. The skilled children's instructors are all trained by Snowsports Norway. They pay attention to each child, understanding that kids learn in different ways—some are brave, others cautious—so the teaching and play on skis are tailored to the individual.

Myrkdalen proudly calls itself a "powder paradise," and the area is indeed highly sought after by off-piste enthusiasts from Norway and Northern Europe. The varied terrain offers a wealth of diverse experiences, and the local ski guides are always ready to offer advice on where to find the best snow in Myrkdalen and the surrounding areas.

Close to the ski centre, you’ll find two popular summit tours to Finnbunuten (1,358 m) and Bjørndalskamben (1,402 m), both of which are ideal for a beautiful day trip with breathtaking views.

For an off-piste experience like no other, take the ski bus to Flåm and from there, the Flåmsbana to Vatnahalsen. The train ride itself is a unique experience—often called the world’s most beautiful train journey—and once you reach the top, Vatnahalsen offers fantastic, varied terrain with long, fine descents in all directions.

If you’re not keen on venturing out on your own, there are plenty of opportunities for guided summit tours of all difficulty levels.

Off-piste and summit tours

If you’re staying at Myrkdalen Hotel, cross-country skiing experiences await right outside the door. Just across the road, you’ll find the Åmostlia area with a 5 km loop track and around 30 km of groomed trails for classic and skate skiing.

The 5 km loop track is hilly and perfect for both cross-country enthusiasts looking for a challenge and families who want to have a fun day in the snow and enjoy a hot chocolate along the way.

If you haven’t had enough snow fun during the day, the main track is also illuminated most evenings, allowing you to continue skiing after dark.

Connected to Åmostlia are approximately 30 km of groomed trails, offering fantastic nature experiences on mountains and through valleys—and if your legs get tired during the day, you can take the ski bus back from Myrkdalsvatnet in the afternoon.

If you, like many others, have decided to try mountain skiing, you’ll find endless possibilities on Vikafjellet, the beautiful mountain plateau between Myrkdalen and Vik.

Here you can go on a long trek up to the mountain and enjoy a beautiful view of the Sognefjord, or take the kids for a sled ride on a relatively flat route with few hills in Sendedalen.

If you don’t have your own mountain skis or sled with you in Norway, both can be rented at the ski rental.

Cross-country and mountain skiing

Dog sledding Enjoy an unforgettable family experience with Hardanger Husky’s sled dogs.

In Myrkdalen, you can have an incredible adventure in the snow: try driving your own dog sled team! Right by Myrkdalen Camping, Hardanger Husky offers husky tours where you can drive your own dog sled along a 4-km trail.

Two people share a sled, and you’ll both get a chance to drive during the journey—well-guided by one of the experienced guides. You’ll get up close to the beautiful snow-covered landscape by the lake Myrdalsvatnet, and the fun and cozy experience concludes around the campfire with good conversation and a little treat.

Looking for a delightful afternoon with a touch of indulgence? Head to Restaurant Nuten at Myrkdalen Hotel.

Here, they have revived the old British tradition of "Afternoon Tea," complete with homemade scones, sandwiches, sweet treats, plenty of tea—and for a little extra pampering, a glass of sparkling champagne.

Sit back, enjoy the sound of clinking porcelain and the delicious treats on your plate—and forget all about the stresses of daily life.

As the day comes to an end, your winter adventures are far from over: It’s time to head towards the Myrkdalsekspressen ski lift.

When the slopes close in the evening, the whole family can enjoy a thrilling ride from the top of the hill down to Myrkdalen Hotel—on a snowracer! Halfway through the ride, everyone stops for some delicious hot drinks before continuing down the snow-covered mountain—a fun and exciting experience for the entire family!

Toboggan Run in Myrkdalen

Board the electric ferry departing from Flåm – then sit back and look forward to a fantastic nature experience in Aurlandsfjorden and Nærøyfjorden.

The narrow fjords are surrounded by high, steep mountains and appear almost exactly as they did 100 years ago – wild, rugged and inaccessible, with few signs of human activity or impact.
Along the way, you'll pass beautiful waterfalls, cosy little villages, lonely farms clinging to the mountainsides, the beautiful Undredal, the inspiration for Arendelle in the Frost films – and, of course, plenty of unique mountain scenery.
At its narrowest point, Nærøyfjorden is just 250 metres wide, and the trip through the fjord is called one of the most dramatic fjord trips in Europe.

You can choose to either take a Nærøyfjord cruise round trip between Flåm and Gudvangen or go one way and take a scabintle bus back to Flåm, so you can see the beautiful terrain from the land side as well.

Fjord cruise on Nærøyfjorden

The excursions are adapted to the weather and the size of the group – some outings take you by boat to one of the many mountain lakes in the area, others to good fishing spots along a riverbank or lake shore.

The tours start at Myrkdalen Hotel, where the guide will pick you up and take you to the chosen fishing spot. The camp is set up here – and then the fishing rod is cast!

At the end of the day, the whole group gathers around the fire where the catch of the day is prepared – who can catch the biggest fish?

What could be better than a leisurely ride through the forest while the birds are chirping – or riding at a fast gallop through the mountains where all you can hear is the contented snorting of the horses?

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced rider, children and adults alike can go on a wonderfully eventful outing with Myrkdalen Hestesenter. The riding centre offers both riding lessons on the track and longer excursions into the countryside, on which the route and horses are always tailored to the needs of each individual rider.

Experience the Norwegian mountains on horseback

Flåm is a popular destination for a day trip when holidaying in Myrkdalen. Stroll through the homely village and enjoy the spectacular view of the Aurlandsfjord. Stop by Flåm Railway Museum – a free museum that tells the fascinating story behind the unique Flåmsbana railway, the steepest and most beautiful railway in the world.

Enjoy lunch at Ægir BryggeriPub – perhaps accompanied by a local beer. The pub is housed in an extremely cosy Viking-style building, which is an experience in itself.

You should then head for the Stegastein viewpoint, 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord. Here you have a unique panoramic view of the green, snow-covered mountains and the beautiful fjord below. The view takes most people's breath away and is probably one of the most photographed landscapes in Norway!

You can round off the day with another visit to Ægir BryggeriPub – or perhaps a delicious dinner at Flåmstova Restaurant in the cosy Flåmsbrygga Hotel, before returning to Myrkdalen.

Day trip to Flåm and Aurlandsfjord

Right next to Myrkdalen Hotel, children and adults can let off steam on the 850-m2 pump track and skills course, which offers challenges for beginners and advanced riders of all ages. If you like even hillier terrain, you can also burn off some energy on the laid-out trails and cycle paths around the hotel.

If you prefer quieter excursions into the beautiful countryside, you can take part in guided e-bike tours in Myrkdalen. The tours start at Myrkdalen Hotel. With e-bikes, it is now easier to go both further and higher than would otherwise be possible with a normal bicycle. So you can look forward to three hours full of beautiful views and fantastic nature experiences – and if you don't have your own bikes with you, you can hire electric bikes from the hotel.

Cycling experiences for the whole family

On the tour, you will see how the Vikings lived and travelled, see their boats, houses, weapons and tools, hear their story and experience how the Viking Age has left its mark even today.
Take a walk among the more than 20 houses of the Viking village and see the craftsmen in action, or try your hand at archery, axe throwing or Viking games – because in Njardarheimr, history is brought to life all around you.
The local Vikings will be happy to tell you about their life, religion and crafts, and you can finish off your visit by tasting the freshly prepared Viking dishes made from authentic ingredients – cooked over a fire, of course.

In the VossVind wind tunnel you can experience what it's like to fly as Superman. The experience is for all ages and requires no special training or fitness – in fact, the oldest person to try the experience was 100 years old!
After a basic instruction, your personal instructor leads you into the wind tunnel and then the flight begins. The wind starts and you spread your "wings" and float freely in the air for two times a minute and a half – a fascinating experience for all ages!

VossVind – Here everyone can fly!

The impressive railway winds along the steep mountain sides on its way from Flåm to Myrdal and has an ascent of 866 metres on the just 20 km long trip.
One of the world's steepest standard gauge railways, the railway is one of Norway's most popular attractions, offering unique panoramas of some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent fjord scenery.

The fascinating tour is a great experience for young and old alike as you're taken through a landscape straight out of a fairytale film – in fact, there are so many beautiful viewpoints on the tour that many people end up taking it several times or at different times of year.

The journey offers a wealth of varied impressions as the train passes mountains and valleys, rides alongside gushing rivers or mirror–clear lakes, passes through tunnels and follows the mountainsides on tracks that will take the breath away of even the most seasoned traveller.

There's plenty of opportunity to take great travel photos – or just sit back and enjoy the view over a delicious cup of coffee or hot cocoa.

The Flåm Railway – The World's Most Beautiful Railway

Once you reach the top, you can head back down the mountain via short and easy hiking trails – you may want to take a break at the cosy Fjellstova Vetlebotn cafe, but you can also take the rather more challenging routes that lead you to some of the area's most popular hiking destinations. Some hiking trails lead past cool rivers where you can take a refreshing dip along the way.

Mørkvestølen, an idyllic old farm, set in a landscape that looks as if it has come straight out of the film Lord of the Rings. Enjoy your packed lunch while savouring the view over Lake Myrdalsvatnet and the surrounding mountains.

The beautiful mountain lake of Svortetjødn invites you to take a cool dip before heading back down the mountain. Look out for the area's adventurous sheep – they can sometimes be seen on the steep mountain slopes around the lake.

Finnbunuten peak, which offers a fantastic view of three of the area's fascinating glaciers on a clear day: Hardangerjøkul, Jostedalsbreen and Folgefonna.

On the way back, you can either take the chairlift again or follow the hiking trails down to Myrkdalen Hotel.

Myrkdalsekspressen – the fast way up the mountain
