Fjord Line works systematically to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations – not only at sea. Now, one of the ferry company’s largest suppliers is switching to electric trucks.
Fjord Line has long been a driving force for more environmentally friendly operations. The company operates the world’s first LNG-powered cruise ferries, has halved food waste on board, and continuously implements measures to improve energy efficiency across its fleet.
However, sustainability efforts do not stop at the gangway.
– We have clear expectations that our suppliers actively work to reduce their own environmental footprint. It’s not about setting unrealistic demands, but about finding solutions together with partners who share our ambitions, says Kyrre Andresen, Chief Commercial Officer at Fjord Line.
Food supplier AB Catering is the latest example of this approach. As one of Fjord Line’s largest suppliers, the company provides goods for both the large tax-free shops and raw ingredients for the restaurants on board. Up to six times a week, the company’s trucks travel from the warehouse in Aalborg to the ferry port in Hirtshals.
From January 2026, all these deliveries will be carried out using fully electric trucks – completely emission-free.
– Not all customers care how goods are delivered, as long as they arrive as agreed. Fjord Line is different. They don’t just accept that things work – they ask how they can be done more sustainably. That’s an ambition we share. This is why our partnership makes both of us better, says Anders Bo Andersen, Sales Manager at AB Catering.
The transition to emission-free transport is the result of close cooperation between the two companies. Over time, Fjord Line and AB Catering have developed delivery solutions that ensure food safety, efficient logistics and a reduced climate impact.
For Fjord Line, this is one of several initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact across the entire value chain.
– Modern ships and energy-efficient operations are at the core of our sustainability work. But we also need to look at what happens around the voyage itself. When we can cut emissions from land-based deliveries, it makes an important contribution, says Kyrre Andresen at Fjord Line.
– That’s why we greatly appreciate suppliers like AB Catering. They are forward-thinking, see solutions where others see challenges, and share our belief that more sustainable operations are the only way forward, Andresen adds.

Since 2014, Fjord Line has operated the world’s first LNG-powered cruise ferries. MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord use liquefied natural gas as fuel, resulting in approximately 25 per cent lower CO₂ emissions compared to conventional marine diesel.
The ships are also equipped with systems that recover excess heat from the engines for onboard heating, hull coatings that reduce friction and fuel consumption, and a range of other sustainability measures.
Through a series of small and large initiatives in onboard restaurant operations, Fjord Line has halved food waste across its three ships in recent years. This corresponds to nearly 50 tonnes per year.
– It’s about changing the mindset of both employees and guests through many small actions that together have a significant impact, says Morten Bo Poulsen, Head of Onboard Sales & Service at Fjord Line.

Fjord Line continues its work to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations. The company closely monitors developments in alternative fuels and continuously tests new initiatives to cut emissions and improve energy efficiency.
– Sustainability is not a goal you reach and then move on from. It’s a continuous process where we are constantly looking for new opportunities for improvement – both on board and on land, says Fjord Line CEO Brian Thorsted Hansen.
He has a clear message for the company’s suppliers and partners:
– Bring us your ideas. If you see opportunities to reduce emissions or make our collaboration smarter, we would very much like to hear from you. The best solutions are found together.
