AutoPASS – Automatic payment of toll road fees in Norway

Text: Fjord LinePublished 03.10.2022

Are you planning a road trip in Norway in your car or motorhome? Then be aware that many roads in Norway are subject to road tolls. Register your vehicle with AutoPASS to get your toll tag before you go – and get a discount on your fees!

Norway has a long tradition of charging road and ferry tolls [AN1] that contribute to the construction and upkeep of the country’s vital infrastructure. The toll roads are most common near the big cities, but many major roads in the countryside may also be subject to a toll, as will a number of the ferries that function as an integrated part of the Norwegian road grid, especially along the west coast.

How does AutoPASS work?

The AutoPASS system works by a system of strategically placed toll booths that register your vehicle by use of cameras. You will then be subject to a road toll for the distance you have travelled on the toll road in question (or for your ferry crossing on a toll ferry).

The fees are added up and, unless you pre-register your vehicle and payment information, you will receive an invoice in the mail after your trip where you are charged according the highest rates in the system.

If you wish to pre-register, you have two options as the owner of a foreign vehicle:

- Register at EPASS24. With this option, you register your vehicle and preferred payment option (credit card charges or invoice) and you do not get a tag for your car. If you register your car’s environmental information at autopass.no as well, you will get a fee adjusted to your type of car.

- Get an AutoPASS toll tag. With this option, you register your car registration and environmental data and get a toll tag to place in your car. With this option, you pay fees adjusted to your type of vehicle AND get an additional 20% discount (see below).

Get a discount with an AutoPASS toll tag

Luckily for you, even as a tourist, you have access to the easiest – and usually cheapest – way to pay these road tolls, namely with the AutoPASS toll tag.

The huge advantage of this system – in addition to you not having to worry about it at all once you have registered your vehicle and payment information and received the toll tag to be placed in your vehicle during your trip – is that the toll rates are adjusted to the environmental data of your car (in areas that employ environmentally differentiated tariffs. (e.g., diving vehicles into zero-emission, plug-in hybrids, diesel or petrol/gas/ethanol etc.).

In other words, if you drive an environmentally friendly vehicle with a AutoPASS toll tag, you will pay a lower fee – and in addition, you will get a 20% discount on your rates no matter which car you drive! (If you do not register your vehicle and its environmental data up front, you will simply be charged according to the highest rates for your vehicle size).

How do I get an AutoPASS toll tag?

In order to get an AutoPASS toll tag, you need to contact one of Norway’s toll service providers – find a full list here:

Once you have signed a user agreement with your chosen provider, you will receive a toll tag in the mail. This also means that you should make sure to sign up to AutoPASS well before your trip so you can be certain to receive the tag before you leave your home.

It is NOT possible for small private vehicles to get a toll tag at the Norwegian border, so if you have not received the tag before you set out for your trip, you will need to use the EPASS24 system instead – and miss your discounted rates.

The AutoPASS toll tag for motorhomes

If you travel as a tourist in Norway in a motorhome, the same rules apply to you as if you had been driving in a smaller car.

In other words, you can register your motorhome for an AutoPASS toll tag and will pay the same rates as a regular car.

Be aware that if you do NOT register for an AutoPASS toll tag, you will be charged the road toll rates of a heavy vehicle.

The AutoPASS toll tag for foreign rented/leased vehicles

If you are driving a rented or leased foreign vehicle during your vacation in Norway, you will need to register at EPASS2024 or order an AutoPASS toll tag – otherwise the invoice will be sent to the legal owner of the car (that is, the rental or leasing company) who will then charge you for the toll payment, possibly with an added administrative fee.
