The best five beaches in Southern Norway

When people think of holidays in Norway, not many envision sandy beaches and scantily-clad bathers. But the southern part of Norway actually boasts a string of delightful sandy beaches, where you can take a lovely dip in surroundings that are very different to ones we’re familiar with on the Danish west coast or at North Zealand’s beaches.

Our recommendations are inspired by Visit Sørlandet. Here are our top 5 (plus a bonus tip) for the most beautiful beaches in Southern Norway – perfect for an unforgettable day out.

Sjøsanden in Mandal

In Mandal, near Tregde, you’ll find many beautiful swimming spots – and usually a good place to go, no matter the wind direction.

The highlight is Sjøsanden, one of Norway’s most well-known and popular beaches. The approximately 800-metre-long beach is within easy walking distance of the town centre. Thanks to its sheltered location, water temperatures are often pleasant – ideal for a day by the sea.

Haviksanden in Lista

Haviksanden impresses with its fine white sand and excellent swimming conditions – making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

Kitesurfers also favour this beach, especially when it’s too windy elsewhere. A large car park makes access easy – perfect for a spontaneous stop, for example after visiting the Lista Lighthouse.

Donestranden in Søgne

Donestranden is located in the Helleviga nature area, southwest of Kristiansand. The sheltered lagoon with its fine sandy beach is particularly family-friendly.

You’ll find tables, benches and barbecue areas on site – ideal for a relaxing break after a swim. There are also several walking trails nearby through forests and along the coastline.

Lomsesanden in Farsund

Lomsesanden is about an hour’s drive west of Tregde and, thanks to its location in a bay, is well protected from the wind.

Here, you can enjoy a relaxing day at the beach, especially in the shallow waters along the white sandy shore. During summer, you can even buy ice cream right by the beach at Lomsesanden Family Camping.

Hamresanden near Kristiansand

Hamresanden, located near Kristiansand and the zoo (Dyreparken), stretches for around 3 kilometres and is ideal for families.

The beach offers shallow water and fine sand – perfect for swimming, playing and building sandcastles. If you’re staying in Kristiansand, you can easily reach the beach by bus from the city centre.

Bonus tip: City beach in Kristiansand

One of Southern Norway’s most popular beaches is located right in the centre of Kristiansand: Bystranda.

This well-maintained city beach offers bathing piers, seating areas – and even palm trees. It is also home to the well-known “Palmesus” festival, Scandinavia’s largest beach festival.
